Identity Theft - Security Freeze

A credit freeze, also known as a security freeze, is now available free to everyone throughout the country. Under a new federal law, you are able to freeze and unfreeze your credit files at the three major credit reporting agencies without a fee. You can also place a security freeze for a child under 16 or an incapacitated adult.

A security freeze is a tool that gives you the choice to “freeze” or lock access to your credit file. A freeze prevents the credit reporting agencies from releasing your credit report or score. This blocks everyone, including identity thieves, so new accounts, services, instant credit, or a loan cannot be opened using your information. Placing, temporarily lifting or permanently removing a freeze is free.

You can request a freeze online, by phone, mail or app by contacting Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. When requesting a credit freeze, be prepared to provide your social security number and answer questions to verify your identity. Following is more contact information to get your free credit freeze:

Equifax - 888-298-0045 - https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services
Equifax Information Services LLC P.O. Box 105788 Atlanta, GA 30348-5788

Experian - 888-397-3742 - https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html
Experian Security Freeze P.O. Box 9554 Allen, TX 75013

TransUnion - 888-909-8872 - https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze
TransUnion Security Freeze P.O. Box 160 Woodlyn, PA 19094

Since a freeze will not prevent the fraudulent use of credit cards, bank accounts, investments, or other financial products, routinely check all accounts for unauthorized or suspicious activity. Immediately report and dispute all problems or unauthorized transactions.

If you have a problem with a credit reporting agency regarding placing a credit freeze, file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or call 855-411-2372.
